Psalm 1 reveals a stark contrast between the one who is blessed and the one who is a scoffer. The contrast is illustrated by three distinct secrets that help one enter the blessings that God has in store. If you want to find God’s blessings, here’s how.
Blessings From Voice.
The blessed person delights in the law of God.
It consumes his thinking because of his love for God and for His law. From the heart of gratitude and love comes a voice (attitude) that is one of delight. Our voice can be one of praise and devotion, and a life that is lived that way will be full of blessings.
To receive blessings from God, choose to utterly delight in His law.
The scornful can only mouth bad things.
The word “scornful” means literally “to make mouths at”. We say something similar when we suggest someone “mouths off”. These people have nothing good to say; only complaining, bickering, and griping come from them. Their “delight” sits in the scoffer’s seat.
Blessings From Production.
The blessed person is like a tree planted near a river.
This person is fruitful. His actions bless others because he is producing the fruit of God. This in turn produces life for him, more blessings from God. Though he grows old, he continues to remain young, fresh, and joyful! This person will certainly see difficulties in life, but the end will bring joy and happiness–a life that is vibrant, delightful, and beneficial to himself and those surrounding him.
If you want blessings from God, be a blessing to others.
The ungodly person is dead and dry.
He produces nothing, helps no one, and does not even benefit himself. His words, thoughts, and fruit of his life are dry, pathetic, offer no value, and crumble in his own hands. His is a life full of sorrow, scowling at the injustices of this world, unable to understand why he cannot gain traction and produce the things he sees others produce.
Blessings From Progress.
The godly person stands even in judgment.
A godly person lives with other righteous people in his life, and the Lord knows his path and showers him with more blessings. The labor of his hands are productive and the path of his feet are secure. The progress is fruitfulness because he listens to the law of God and walks in the known path.
If you want God’s blessings, walk in the pathway of righteousness and goodness.
The unwise stands not at all.
The unwise walks in the counsel of the wicked, stands in the path of sinners, and in the end sits down in the seat of the scornful. His way of life is not a way of life at all.
Don’t sit life out. The scornful are there.
Walk in the way of the godly and be what God will make you to become.
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
