“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Genesis 6:8).
The nature of God is to love. Even when He saw the earth full of violence and corruption in the days of Noah, He still waited before destroying the earth. He waited for Noah to build the ark so that humanity could be saved.
Noah was a great man
The Bible says, “Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9).
It’s difficult to imagine a world so full of darkness, and sin so great that it would make God regret having created it. By giving us free will, He allowed Himself to face such grief.
It’s also difficult to imagine living in a world like that and remaining “perfect in his generations”. Of course this does not mean he never made mistakes, but the point is that he walked with God. He trusted God. And it was this foundation upon which God chose to save him. This is what made Noah great. What must have it been like to live in such a world? The only possible way Noah survived is the same way we can survive today: trust in God’s graciousness.
God’s is trustworthy
This is not a discussion about the contrast between grace and works. Plenty has been said about it. Let’s notice one fact: God could have simply washed everyone away at the time, and we would not be having this discussion. In fact, while the Bible does not speak the same way about God again, it’s very possible that this was not the only time He contemplated destroying everything and being done with us once for all. But God is patient. He had a plan and He intended to see it through to the end.
The reason is love. It’s the foundation of His grace towards us. It’s why Noah found grace. It’s why we have the ability to find forgiveness and survive this world.
It is certainly something for us to think about deeply. Take a few minutes today to think how God has blessed you. Things may not look like they are going well, and you are probably facing hardships and trials, but when your world is dark and lonely, stay faithful to God. He may be waiting patiently until the time is right to help you. You can count on Him!
